The objective of this campaign was to educate a small group of IT professionals about their set of 13 secure coding principles. Delivering a number of highly technical messages that are essential in the protection of company assets and integrity required some imaginative thinking!


The challenge


Traditionally, this audience has been difficult to engage with having become too accustomed to the corporate communication channels most regularly used. We decided the most effective way to inspire our audience about their security responsibilities was to use humour. The success of this campaign depended on how much the audience was willing to participate and interact with one another.


Collaborating closely with our client ensured we achieved clear return on investment. We created and supplied all the collateral and props including a bespoke animation and an A0 poster displaying the 13 secure coding principles. The team managing the project co-hosted the session to support the security team.


All input is evil


A plan was coming together. The project took the form of a dynamic Halloween themed game show, designed to focus on learning and maximise audience participation. We began by sending an invitation-style desk drop to the security team. Without giving too much away, this was successful in generating a sense of anticipation and discussion on the topic.

Seven quiz rounds combined fun and humour with cognitive learning. The audience demonstrated healthy competition and the use of film clips visually demonstrated the essence of the secure coding principles.

The outcome


We measured the success of the campaign using feedback forms issued to all the participants. The responses were overwhelmingly positive and allowed us to test attendees' awareness and knowledge after the session took place. The feedback showed that 80% of participants could recall at least half of the 13 secure coding principles. The Security & Continuity Manager confirmed post-event that the team were now actively demonstrating their understanding of the key messages and had clearly benefited from our varied approach towards communicating this technical and business-critical subject matter.
